Ignite my passion Love Spell

Today I would like to give my readers a simple post talking about a love spell. This love spell is designed to attract romantic and passionate love into your life.

Materials:
Red Witches Salt
Red Candle
Red Rose Petals
Love Oil

Spell:
With a sharp needle or knife inscribe the candle one one side with the word love and the other side passion.
Take the Love Oil and rub the candle from the bottom to the top. As you rub the candle with the oil visualize love growing in your life.
Place the candle on a plate.
Take the red salt and sprinkle the salt around the candle. As you sprinkle the salt around the candle
Next light the candle. As you light the candle state:
“Candle flame burning bright
Ignite my passion on this night
By this candle light
I am within true loves sight”
Sprinkle the rose petals around the candle dropping an occasional petal into the candle.
When the candle is done burning take the remains of the spell under a tree in your yard. As the tree grows so to will your love.

Witchdo Money Jar Spell

Materials:
Small Glass Jar
(Money draw powder)
Green Witches Salt
Coins/small loose change picked up over the course of day to day life
Money Bath and Soak
Fast Cash Oil
Optional:
Succsess Aromatherapy candle

Spell:
Wash the jar seeing it filled with money and succsess. Add 1 tbs of the Money Bath to the wash.
Walk around your home picking up any loose change. As you see the change if it is heads up state “Hi Hunting money you found me” and put it in your pocket. If it is tails flip the coin thrice stating “hunting money ,hunting money, you found me hunting money” Pick it up and kiss it before putting it in your pocket.
Once you have the money gathered put it in your jar.
Cover the jar with the lid
Shake the jar chanting:
“Prosperity flowing free Money and wealth come to me”
See yourself with all your financial needs met and having money to spare for entertainment etc. Shake until you feel it full of that energy.
Uncover the lid. Sprinkle the money powder and the salt over the cash. Add three drops of the Money oil.
Cover and repeat the shaking and chant.

Shake the jar two to three times daily with the chant as above.
At the end of each day put any and all spare/loose change in the jar. Repeat the edition of the oil and powders. Shake here again.

Important note:
Every time you pick up spare change use the “hunting money chant” and that will help bring you wealth and succsess in general.

When the jar is full take the money out and buy yourself something. You can use the same jar over and over again.

Optional:
If you decide to use the candle dress the candle with Fast money oil, Luck gain oil, and The Green salt as well as Money draw powder. Burn it near the jar but not on top of the jar unless you plan on burying the jar to create a permanent charm.

Working with the Happiness Incense

 

A Happiness Working

One of my favorite products is my Happiness Incense blend.  It became a major part of my cleansing rituals and workings for a long time because of how effective it is in magic.  Its also a very uplifting scent.  I’ve found that the potent spirit powers in this blend make it work with very little needed for a single working.  Which means the half ounce packets should last you a while.

Happiness Incense and PowderSo how do you work with the happiness incense and powder?  I personally like to use it sprinkling it around my home after a full house cleansing to invite happiness and peace into the home.  I go through each room stating a prayer for happiness and peace as I sprinkle the powder.  I make sure to get windowsills and into the corners of the rooms.  Sprinkling it on the base of the floor to ensure that the room is charged.  Often times I also fill the room with a pink light and call on the spirits of the plants to bring peace and happiness to the home.I then draw an invocation and sealing pentacle over the room with my hand to seal in the power.  I repeat this in every room.

This simple working has brought happiness during some of my most stressful and most depressed days.  You could also walk around your property and sprinkle the powder outside as well.  This like other powders and oils would double the effect of the working bringing is to be both in the home and out of the home.  This working can also be modified for work spaces and single rooms as well.  Its all about filling the place that needs the mood lifting with an energetic transformation.

There are other ways you could work with this powder as well.  You could sprinkle a little in your shoes in the morning with and affirmation or prayer along the lines of :”With every step I take Peace and happiness is my fate.”  This is a simple charm which would be practical and effective.  Its also one that is hidden and would be based on working with what you have on hand.  The goal is about actively bringing and attracting those energetic forces into your life.

In many ways this powder is the opposite of Hot Foot Powder which is a working to remove negative forces and force them to leave.  This brings about peace and love through an energetic transformation.  It is about attracting something rather than removing it.

Who I am and Why I do this

My name is Loona Wynds.  I have been a practicing with for many years.  I started as a teenager.  At the time the only incense that was available to me for my spell work was the commercial large brands I could find at the local music store.  Which for me at the time was great.  Once and a while I was get a chance to go to a Hippy shop where I could buy Frankincense sticks, Myrrh, and my favorite Dragons Blood.  These worked fine for a 13 year old who was just starting out on her journey in witchcraft but after working with them for 5 years things changed.

Most of the commercial incense (not Nag Champa) use synthetic scents.  These are chemicals whose scents mimic natural scents from herbs and resins, and for some people these are fine.  However my fiance can not breathe with those types of scents burning.  Not wanting to stop my ritual work and my spell work I started to get supplies to craft and make my own powdered natural incense.

This was 10 years ago.  I would only make some incense as I needed it now.  I would store the rest for future use.  This for me just meant more trips to the Leapin Lizards, the local metaphysical store for new herbs and resins for different blends.  Making incense for me made me feel at my witchiest.

I was in control of all the energy in the blend.  I was the one who was able to blend, mix, and shape the energetic forces of the incense to do as I willed.  I got into a trance and I could really feel that the incense was in fact a spell in the making.  The grinding of the resins and flowers or roots together put the physical energy of my desire into the work which lead to manifestation.  This was how I started to understand the real essence of herbal magic.

I’m going to be honest right here and right now.  I never once used a recipe for my incenses.  I never once had a book top guide me in the steps.  My only resources were the herbal packets themselves which had properties and uses on the back and Scott Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Herbs.   I was purely using my intuition, my inner knowing as the old conjureers call it.  So all of my blends were unique.  They were never the same twice, and at the time I didn’t bother to record what I was doing as they were all experiments of the spiritual science of magical herbalism and spiritual aromatherapy.

3 years ago My fiance noticed that though I was trying really hard I was simply not able to find a job.  I applied everywhere and I even had a few interviews.  Nothing was working.  One of my dreams has always been to have my own Metaphysical shop where I could sell supplies to people on their spiritual journeys and help them grow as a witch or pagan or what ever they identified as.

We had been told that because of me history I may be able to get a grant through the Small Business Development center.  I talked to my worker helping me find work and we decided to try to go this route.  After doing a test market of my tinctures, incenses, and some basic herbs I was able to prove that this was a dream that would work.  And now with their help I have come to be able to make and sell the incenses and powders that I do.

 

Why work with powdered incense?

The most original form of incense is pure herbal incense.  The witches, priests, shamans, and magic workers would dry plants and herbs and throw them on the fire for an effect during ritual.  Over time they created different herbal combinations for different rituals and workings.  From there they developed working with small batches for an individual working rather than a full community ritual.  These small batches are how witches continue to work.

By working with the loose herbal and resin form of incense you can control the power of the essence more effectively.  You are also able to communicate with the spirits of the plants.  While they have been dried and harvested the dried plants are like the bone of a person.  They still contain aspects of the plants spirit and essence.  When we make powdered incenses for spell and ritual work it is this essence that we are tapping into.  It is this part of the plants spirit we are working with.

While most incense stick may have some traces of essential oils in the blends you are not dealing with a pure plant essence.  You are simply dealing with the chemical concoctions.  To get a connection with the natural essence of the plant you want to work with dried plants that you either gather yourself (the best option) or buy from a reputable supplier.  Otherwise you may not even be talking to or working with the plant spirit.

In essence witches work with the spirits of the plants they work with.  Using powdered incense that you make yourself is one of the best ways that you can start working with the plant spirits.  You can feel them, speak to them, and get a sense for their energetic properties.  Over time the more you work with the plants the more they will teach you about them and working with them.  I worked with marigold for years in spell work and incense before it revealed its uses in money,finance, and succsess work.  Prior to that most of my work had been with the healing attributes and the psychic development attributes and its still one of my main go to for those works.

 

What are Magical Powders?

Magical powders are not as common in witchcraft as they are in Hoodoo and other folklore and folk magic tradition.  Powders are a very effective way to work magic without being seen or known.  Powders are effective because they work in silence and in the shadows without much fuss or muss.  You are simply sprinkling a mixture around an area or on an object and letting the powder do the work.

In magical powders it really is the spirit of the plants that are doing the work.  While incense send the words and prayers up to Gods and spirits other than the plant spirits, powders are direct to the earth.  Its just the plants, your intent, and mother earth that makes things work.  In magical powders you are really relying on the inner conjure power of the plants and of their spirits.  They will work for you if you are respectful to them.

Not all magical powders are plant matter though.  Several powders like Red brick dust, and grave yard dirt are not based on plant matter but on the organic matter of them.   They are still full of power because of the spirits in them.  The spirit of the place is an important aspect of gathering these powders.

Grave yard dirt is gathered at the cemetery and used in rituals depending on the grave it came from.  This dirt can contain plant matter but in essence instead of the plants you are working with the spirit from the grave where you took the dirt from while.  This is why it s important to do research on the grave you take the dirt from and give them an offering.  It is also for this reason that most people will gather graveyard dirt from the cemeteries of their ancestors or beloved dead.

Powders like Hotfoot and black salt are often made with herbs as well as other items.  In these powders it is still the plant spirits that are working for you, but it is also your intention in the work. Your desire and knowing that the work will be done that makes it work.  The herbs are what boost the intent for the powder and it is sprinkling them onto the earth or object that makes it work.

 

Why you should make your own

Making your own incense and powders is one of the best things you can do in magic and witchcraft. I say this because it allows you to really control the power and the intent in the product.  No one else but you really knows what type of healing you need done or what your money issues are.  By making your own you can really be the magic and be the power behind the working.

It is important to remember that intent is everything in magic and witchcraft.  When you start to make your own blends you get to put your emotional state and your intent into the product from the very beginning.  You are asking the spirits of the plants to aid you in this work and lend their power to your working.  By stating this while you blend and grind the power gets transferred and the energy mixes very well.

While you can use products that have been pre-charged and made by others you will not have as much control over the energy in the product.  They will not have your emotional connection to the spell or working you are trying to do.  The creator of the incense or powder can ask the spirits of the plants to charge the creation for a specific purpose and it will work, just not as effective.  They will put their own emotional charge into the work as their blessing but without your own inner emotional force it is missing and aspect to be as effective as it can be.

You are the magic.  It is your will that directs magic. This is why even when buying stuff from a store you will need to spend your own emotional energy as you do the work.  You will have to make sure that all of your energy gets into the working so that the spirits know your desire and can work for your intent.  This is why in the end I prefer to make all my own products.  It has my partnership with the plant spirits starting from the moment I choose the herbs.

 

 Tools of the Trade

There are several different tools involved in making incense and powders.  You have the Mortar and Pestle, the scale, a mixing bowl, wand, yourself, bags and or containers, and of course the herbs,resins, and essential oils that you wish to work with.  Each of these tools plays a central part in creating your own unique blends of incenses and powders.

The most important tool is the Mortar and Pestal.  Right now I do not have any in stock but my friend does at his shop: Mortar and Pestle.  The mortar and Pestle is how you actually grind and blend the herbs in the incense and powder making.  You choose the herbs, weigh the amounts out and grind them.  Some people grind them one at a time and then place everything in a mixing bowl for a final blending with hands or a wand.  Other people will blend and grind them all within the Mortar and Pestle.  My advice is to start with one herb at a time.  Once you get a feel for the power it takes to grind the herbs in this fashion you can add more herbs to the blend at a time.

The next tool you need are baggies or some sort of storage container.  Once you have made your incense any that you do not burn in a spell or ritual (and a little of homemade magic goes along ways) you will want to be able to store it.  This is the reason I keep most pickle, salsa, and jelly jars.  I can us it for storage of incense, powders, and other blends.  You never know when you will want to do a particular ritual again so it is important to know you can use the same blend again.

You also want to have some sort of paper to record what you did.  This way you will know what you made and be able to make it again if it work perfectly.  If something did not work well (and not every blend works out perfectly the first time) you want to look at what you did so you can try and tweak the recipe and make changes.  This is also a good way to track any manifestations from the work.

A mixing bowl is great if you only have a small mortar and pestle and need more space to blend your herbal mixture.   In this you can fold and mix and blend the herbs ground or not to your hearts content.  I typically do a mixture of using a wand or using my hands.  The wands are great at blasting a direct force of energy into the mixture while my hands do a subtle constant exchange through my personal touch.

One of the reasons I like to use my hands is that I get a direct personal connection with the herbs that I am working with.  As I dig into the herbs I can feel them mix and I can feel the energy as they blend.  I can feel the plants talking together about the purpose and mingling to the best of their abilities.  It also lets me connect with the first witch, the earth mother as all plants are small representatives of the Earth mother.

Unless you are following a specific recipe you really dont need a scale or measuring devices.  If you are following your intuition you can just work with what feels right.  In Mystic Echoes because of the large amount of product I create in a single sitting I weigh the ingredients out by the ounce.  For your own personal use if you want to keep accurate records tablespoons or teaspoons are all you are going to need.

Finally you need to have the herbs.  Your herbs, resins, and essential oils are the most important part of the process.  With out the herbs, essential oils, and resins you will not have any sort of incense and powder.  These are what make your blend your own.  There are hundreds of herbs out there many with similar properties.  It is your personal choice of the herbs you work with and in what amounts that will make your incense blends really your own.

 

Choosing the Herbs and essences

 

The herbs are what make up your powder and your incense.So it is important to choose the right herbs for the right blend.  In two follow up posts I am going to give recipes for a protect your love powder and a love incense.  For now we will cover resources and how to choose the herb to work with for your unique products.

There are many uses for many different herbs on the market.  One of my favorites Dragonsblood (which is a resin) can be used for protection, but also love, lust, money, exorcism, and power.  Its also an offering specific to Dragon spirits.  Another herb Angelica root has Angelic Work, Protection, Hex Removal,Exorcisms, Health, Meditation, and Divination as associations.  Every herb on the market has properties that make them versatile in spell work and in ritual work.

So how do you choose?  One of the things I do is I look up a few recipes in the various book resources I have.  I then write down the recipies that appeal to me.  After having 3 or 4 different recipes I see what is common in them and what is different.  I write down all the herbs that are mentioned and go from there.  This is where my intuition and working with the spirit comes into play.  This is where I let the spirit of the plants guide me.

Once I have a few guides to look at I see what the herbs themselves have to tell me.  More often than not the blend I end up with is different than the one that I had intended to use.  I can see a lust recipe and start working with the herbs I thought might be good and half way through the creation I get a message from an herb “hey your supposed to use me” or a sensation that another plant would work better in the blend.  So I put aside the herb I was going to use and grab the one that told me to work with it.

For those who are new to working with incenses and powders my advice is to actually follow a recipe unless something tells you very strongly to use something else.  In this case many of the books that have recipes and associations with herbs and oils will have replacements or herbs that can be used interchangeably.

This is where many people can start to panic.  They might not have the exotic herbs like Dragons Blood or Angelica root.  But they have something like Basil and black pepper in their kitchen cabinet.  Often times I get asked can I use the same herbs I use in cooking for magic?  And my response is very much yes!  Cinnamon is a good example here.  Cinnamon has properties of money, luck, love, lust, protection, and prosperity.  Black pepper has protection, removal, and magical offense properties.  Your kitchen cabinet has many magical options for you.

This is my point here.  Use what you have on hand.  In the ancient times the witches and priests only had what they could gather locally in the woods or that they could grow in their gardens.  If its something you have in your home I guarantee you can use it in incense or powders.  By doing this you are also well on your way to learning about kitchen witchcraft as well.  I will cover kitchen witchcraft herbs and kitchen witchcraft spells in another post but for now I’ll make the point clear again.  Use what you have on hand.

Working with powders and Loose Herbal Incense

 

Working with loose herbal incense does require a few additional tools.  You need to have charcoal discs and a censor to burn the charcoal disc in.

Lighting the charcoal can be done with any lighter but I personally recommend these aim & flames: Aim & Flame

The reason I suggest you use those longer lighters is that the charcoal discs spark when they are being lit.  It is these sparks across the disc that actually start it burning.  Once it has been sparking you will see a red ring around the charcoal.  Using tongs place it in the censor and sprinkle the incense on the disc as needed for the spell or ritual.  Now your incense is being used in a spell or formal ritual work.

Powdered incense or loose herbal incense can be used in more than just formal rituals.  You can use them as powders sprinkling them in packets, satchets, or around properties.  They can also be used as incense by being burned for offerings to spirits and the Gods.  In rituals they provide atmosphere and make the place feel and seem sacred.

The best way I have found to work with powdered and loose herbal incsnes is both as a powder and as an incense.  When yuo burn the incense your intent is carried by the smoke to the spirits of the air and to the universe via your prayer and charge into the incense when you light it.  Adding it to packets or rubbing the powder on candles will continue the effect and allow another way for the energy of the incense to work.

Powdered incense has one final beneficial use. There are some incense blends like the Happiness Blend and the Stress Relief blends which can be used as aromatherapy. By buring certain scents a person can heal and change their emotional state. This is one of the benefits of powdered and herbal incense. Variations of the Healing Incense would be burned during many healing ritual baths and they would be one of the best aspects of the bath-the soothing scent and caress of the spirits of the plants aiding me in my healing work.

Powders are best used in spells. You can use them to bless a work place by making a blessing powder. The only way they can really effectivly be used in rituals is when they are made in the rituals. For example at Maine Pagan Unity Day after making a love and protect my love incense and powder in my workshop I had some left that I went outside and sprinkled on the ground as a thank you. It was part of the ritual of friendship in the making of the blends and sprinkling it was a thank you and a spreading of the blessings.

You can use them in many different types of spells. In candle magic you roll a candle in the powder as part of dressing the candles. In packets you feed the packets with the powder to keep them going and you can also add them to the packets in the process of making the packet. You can sprinkle them around the house for protection or removal depending on the powder. There are some who even use them in freezing spells and jar spells. In essence you could use them in any spell work you can imagine. With all magic the only limit to their use is your imagination.

Review: Ancient Spellcraft by Laura Perry

There are many books on spells and rituals on the market.  There are some books that deal with magic without deities and some that deal with deities and spirits.  Most of the spells you will find in those books that deal with the ancient deities are modern in origin.  This book is a unique treasure among spell books.  This book actually goes to the source for information on the spells and magical rituals of our ancient fore bearers.

There are nine sections in this book.  There is the introduction and 8 chapters in the book itself.  This book is well organized, though there is one chapter I may have placed in a different location because of a quote mentioned in that chapter.  The rest of the book I feel is in perfect order.  The first chapter is about spell casting the hows and whys and includes a little information about the deities involved.  The second chapter covers the context of the cultures in the book. The next six chapters are full of spells and rituals that are simple, practical, and easy to perform.

The first chapter is one that should not be skipped.  I know its easy when you are researching spells and rituals to jump right to the spells and rituals, which is fine once you know a bit about how magic work and the deities and spirits that are involved.  If you are a beginner or just curious about spell crafting you really need to read this chapter.  It covers the meaning of the word spell, the methods. getting into a magical mindset, and setting up your workspace.  All of those items are important for effective spell casting techniques.

The second chapter like the first one should not be skipped.  This section is all about the region and the cultures that the spells in this book come from.  When you are working with deities and spirits it is important to understand them.  This section talks to you about the different cultures, where they were, when they were in power, and a bit about their history.  This information gives you a basic idea about the types of people that worked with the deities and forces mentioned in the book.  This allows you to approach the powers within as respectfully as you can.

The third Chapter is where we finally start get into the meat of the book.  This is where we start getting into spells and rituals for different needs.  For me this is where the chapter on protection spells should be.  The author states at the beginning of the chapter of protection: “There are more spells in this section of the book than in any other section of this book because protection is of paramount importance.  If we are not protected, we will have no chance to enjoy prosperity, fertility, and all the rest” (Ancient Spell Craft pg 136 by Laura Perry)  Instead the author start out with spells for prosperity.

At the start of each of the chapters on spells there is information on the different types of spells.  There is prosperity of the fields, the business, and other aspects.  The first few pages in the chapter on prosperity and money magic covers the different types.  The author then provides several different spells on field prosperity and on money spells.

The fourth chapter is about Romance spells.  Here the author discusses how while the concept of romantic marriages is new the practice of performing love magic has always been around.  In the past they have been more about lovers outside of marriage or in the form of sacred lovers at the temples.  There are several different spells in this portion, none of them based on targetting someone already in a relationship but in your own words one who will be right for you.

The fifth chapter is about spells for Fertility.  Here the spells are as much about getting pregnant and having children as it is about the fertility of the land.  Without fertile farmlands crops etc we can not have food to live on.  In the ancient world crops were the way of life.  Today those spells and rituals are still effective for personal home gardens and for larger farmers.  The pregnancy spells also provide several different ways of asking for aid in that area of your life.

The sixth chapter is all about protection.  The spells in this section cover protection of the home, your business, from theft, and several other things.  As I said earlier because of the emphasis the author places on protection (in the beginning and at the end of the chapter) I feel that this should have been the first chapter on practical magic.  The chapter ends with a discussion about spiritual protection which is necessary when one begins to work magic and perform rituals. It is for this reason I believe the chapter should be the first one.  Other than that it has every sort of protection that you could ever need to use based on day to day life.

The seventh chapter in the book is my favorite section.  I am a fond of healing spells and healing based magic.  That is the focus of this chapter.  This spell has a road opener spell (for those unable to move forward based on illnesses or issues) and spells about removing your illnesses.  There are spells for emotional healing as well as physical healing.  This chapter covers everything you would ever need to know for any sort of healing.

The last chapter is on divination.  Reading oracles and divining the future has always been a part of religious and magical workings.  There are many different traditions of divination from tarot cards to I-ching coins, to reading stones tossed in a blanket.  This chapter provides several different spells and divination rituals of sorts.  These simple to perform spells often allow for easy to read signs and omens to see if your works are going to come through and to see what needs to be done in a situation.

I want to compliment the author on their diligent research on the topic of ancient magic and the cultures.  They have a substantial bibliography for such a small and informative book.  The only other suggestion I would have to make this book better would be to have an appendix in new editions listing the deities mentioned and their associations so people have references for the deities when they decide to start making their own spells.

I have been a practicing with for 17 years. It’s only been in the last few years that I have actually started to be open to working candle magic. I really had no idea how to start and how to get working. This book provided me with everything that I needed to know. Now there are several spells in this books that I am excited to try.

This simple book is really made out of four different sections. There is the section of preparation, section for witchcraft style spells, and a section on Christian style candle magic rituals. The final section is an appendix that talks about and covers temptation in magic and ways to work magic without candles due to living situations.

The section on recuperation which opens the book really should not be forgotten. This small section talks about the various things you need to be ready to practice this magic. There are no complex theories, breathing rituals or guided meditations. Just simple explanations on tools, space, and how to work with the candle. The section closes with a few important correspondences for colors, days of the week, and colors for the zodiac signs (all of which are important for the spells and rituals in the following sections).

The first thing mentioned in the section about witchcraft spells I dont agree with which was a statement about witchcraft being a religion and magic a practice. Witchcraft is not a religion. It can have religious elements. However since witchcraft was not the focus of the book, the mention was only really to note the difference in approach between the witchcraft and pagan spells and the Christian themed spells.

The spells are written out in plain and simple language. The only materials needed for the spells are the candles and dressing oils and incense of your choice. Each spell comes with an altar or work surface set up. All you need to do is follow the words as they are outlined in the book. Every altar setup includes a space for the book to use as a reference.

The third section of the book focuses on Christian spells. Many of these spells use the Psalms in the working. The spells are very similar to the workings in the previous section. The differences really are in the spirits and divine beings that are involved. The best part about this section is that is gives Christian Witches a great starting point and reference guide for spells that can be used in their day to day lives.

The appendices honestly I think would be best located in the opening section. I say this because here there is a discussion on creative visualization and a little bit on magical ethics. I believe that these sections placed earlier in the book would allow the practitioner to have more success in magic earlier since visualization is a large part of many magical traditions.

I overall have to say that this book is a great resource and will be a reference guide for me in many years to come.

Forming new Products

The process of forming new Products

 

Today I am going to discuss the process that goes into developing each and every herbal product that we sell. I handcraft each tincture and each incense blend and over the next few weeks will be crafting oils and candles. The process that goes into crafting each of these items is the same regardless of what form the product takes. It is a mixture of intuition, research, and hearing experiences from others in crafting similar items or when working with similar oils and products. The process is intense and it does take a lot of time but I as a witch and magician learn a lot about herbs and oils through this research and am able to grow my craft so I can best benefit you my customers.

In this post I am going to discuss the importance of each part in crafting the items I sell for you here. Without any one of the aspects of this process I would not be able to ensure the quality of the products I have to my customers. These parts are also essential to how I approach my spiritual crafts and practices in general so the crossover is essential. As I grow in my craft and practice so do my skills and my abilities to provide products that serve the needs of my customers.

 

Research

When it comes time to develop a new product I think about what I want to make.  For example when I think of oils I make a list of oils I have thought about working with and or have worked with.  I also think about spells and what sort of magical oils would best work with those spells I want to help my customers cast.  With the list of the oils I want to craft based on needs created I turn to books and websites. This is where the research portion really begins.

There are three Primary books I work with on my general witchcraft and magical oils, incenses, tinctures, and brews.  Those books are Magical Aroma Therapy, & The complete book of Incense, Oils, and Brews both by Scott Cunningham.  The last physical book I work with is the book Kitchen Witchery by Marilyn Daniels.  These three books form the basis of my general occult, witchcraft, and magical herbal products..  I also have an e-book by Lady Gianne called The Magical Oil Recipe Book.

A few of my new Oils, Tinctures, and Powders have a Hoodoo Inspiration to them.  This is true.  I am starting to as I have mentioned on the Facebook page, this blog and our other outlets that I am starting to study and explore the practice of Hoodoo.  These products that are inspired by Hoodoo have been deeply researched.  I have books and websites I have looked into for herbal associations, recipes, and spells from the Hoodoo perspective.

These Hoodoo inspired products have additional prayers and charging aspects done with them.  They are also prepared in a slightly different mentality as the ethics within Hoodoo vastly differs from the ethics found within most modern witchcraft traditions.  So I make it my own by adding my witchy inspiration to the mix.  Its the addition of herbs from a witches cabinet as well as those from Hoodoo/Rootwork/Southern Conjure that makes the products Hoodoo inspired rather than being strictly traditional Hoodoo.

After I use my book resources I start to look into the second phase of developing my products.  The second phase of product development really doesn’t make any sense without the research first.  The research prepares you for what you might encounter in this next phase.  For me this helps temper my overwhelming inspiration and intuition at times with the research.

Personal Experiences

This second phase is one of the main reasons I have joined so many different forums and social media exchanges related to witchcraft over the years.  The sharing of personal experiences for me is one of the best ways to explore experiences both that you have had and that you have and those you have read about.  The sharing of personal experiences by others is also a way to prepare oneself for doing new work.  Its a way of gathering insight and may provide ways of looking at things that you would not otherwise consider.

Personal experiences with herbs can also help a person develop a wider understanding of herbal spirits and practices.  While there are some spiritual and magical aspects that seem to cross cultures with various herbs, other experiences are based in culture or tradition specific practices.  By combing the traditional lore shared in books with personal experiences deeper relationships with herbs can develop.

At the same time new herbs and new ways of performing magic and working with herbs based on the needs can also be learned through discussions of personal experience.  Through these discussions healing charms that can be carried in the pocket and may be a single herb can be learned about and simplicity can be embraced.  Other applications could be learning edible and medicinal aspects to herbs as well as folk medicine and remedies that one may not have considered before.

One personal experience notes have been taken down and added to the notes from book research the final stage of the actual preparation begins.  This is the stage where my witch hat gets applied and my spirit speaks through me.  This is where the actual crafting of the spell and magical actions beginnings before the physical development starts.  here is the mental preparation and focus.

Intuitive decisions

During the research portion I write down copies of the recipes that spark my intuition and make me think “yes this is what I want”. When I am done with the personal experience notes I gather the recipes and I put them into piles based on need and topic (all money oils together, all healing oils together etc).   After a while I look at the piles.  I will then take all the recipes of that need (lets work with money for example here) and compare the components in each recipe.

I’ve noticed that it is very common to have multiple recipes in a book related to needs.  There are several different types of money oils I have found in each of my resources.  In noticing this factor I also made a note of the exact nature of the money oil (wealth, employment, fast cash, etc).  This helped me further refine my own product decisions and allowed me to start refining magical and spiritual practices to more specific needs and desires.

I make a list of the herbs and oils I find in each recipe.  From there I look at my herbal correspondence lists from earlier research.  These lists provide excellent resources for future development as associations are already listed and correspondences have started to become known.  Through using the herbs in multiple ways I start to know them very well.  After working with them in a time the knowledge becomes second nature and I just know what herbs to add to a spell or ritual.

Its at this point that I start to write down what oils and herbs are going to be used in what new product.  I often look at what I already have in stock so I can continue to develop working relationships with those herbs.  However I am also always looking for new herbs and minerals to add to my practice.  In each new product release I am working with a new herb or mineral.  The last batch added sea salt to my practice.  This new batch is adding several new herbs and essential oils.

Once I have the herbs and oils decided I can start the actual blending.  After making decisions based on the research and personal experience my intuition decided in the end which herbs and oils to be used for each blend.  Aside from choosing the herbs and oils there is one other essential aspect to the product development with the use of my intuition.  That is the actual ratios of the herbs.

Often times in practice the actual plans end up needing to be changed to an extent.  The ground herbs can take up more or less space than originally planned and envisioned.  In this case slight changes need to be made based on how much of an individual herb I have left as well as for occasionally looking at substitutions.

This is where the intuition and personal knowledge and experience with the herbs comes into play.  The more I know an herb through experience the better I can decide what to substitute and what to add.  This also for me is where being crafty can come into play as I have to let the spirits of the plants and my spirit speak to me much as artists must let their muse speak to them.  The blending of herbs is an art form in its own right.  Its a spiritual art that often goes unappreciated.

Once these are all placed into balance the product has been developed.  I test its use myself and keep some of each batch for my own personal use.  This ensures to me that the quality of the product I send out is the same quality I would use myself.  If I wouldn’t use it I wont sell it.  This philosophy is also why the development of herbal products is tied directly into my own personal spiritual development and magical studies.  The more I study and experience the more I can provide here.

Review: Earth Power by Scott Cunningham

Earth Power

The book Earth Power by Scott Cunningham is a very simple to read and easy to follow book that covers the basics of magic and witchcraft. The author provides several easy to follow spells and rituals that enable a new seeker to be able to read the book and start practicing magic right away. This tome provides spells and rituals for beginners as well as experienced practitioners of magic.

This book is divided into three sections. The first section of the book talks about the basics of magic and spell crafting. This provides a foundation for being able to use and work with the materials found later on in the book. This section is made up of four different chapters each covering an aspect of the basics of magic. It is here that the instructional and how to aspects of magic are really discussed.

The first chapter in the book starts the basics section. This chapter begins with an illustration of natural magic being practiced. This example provides the context for this chapter which is the nature of the universe and the real nature of magic.

The second chapter in the book focuses on what magic is and how to practice it. This chapter covers what is needed to practice magic as well morality in regards to magic. Here we learn the forces behind magic and why magic works.

The third chapter is all about magical techniques. Here the author focuses on the use of symbolism and the use of those associations in magic. The author includes a list of common symbols and associations for the beginner to reference as an idea. Finally the chapter ends with techniques of energy raising as well as the importance of mental focus and concentration.

The last chapter in the first section is really our introduction to the majority of the book. Here the author introduces the concept of the four elements and how they work in magic. The author includes only bare bones basics about the elements as more detail is given later. The idea here was only to introduce the elemental concepts and associations so that the rest of the book makes sense.

The second section of this book focuses on the elemental powers and elemental magic. The elements in witchcraft and magic are powerful forces and this section deals with calling upon the right element for the right purpose. In this section we learn all about the elements and what magical practices they rule over. This section is only four chapters long, one for each elemental force. Here is where we begin to see the practical applications and uses of natural and elemental magic.

The fifth chapter focuses on the element of Earth. Within this chapter the author expands on the basics given in the previous chapter about the element of earth. There are several different spells and rituals given that focus on and use specifically the element of earth to manifest the desires.

The sixth chapter focuses on the element of air. Here we learn about the different aspects of the winds based on direction and how we can best use the attributes of air. There are spells and rituals here for calling up the winds as well as working with the element of air to the best of our abilities.

The seventh chapter in this book focuses on the element of fire. Here we are shown ways that the element of fire can be useful outside of candle magic. The author includes a few different spells that utilize the unique personality of the fire element.

The eighth and last chapter in the second section of the book deals with the element of water. Many of the spells and rituals in this chapter deal with cleansing and healing. Through the spells and rituals in this chapter the aspects of the element of water in magic are clearly described.

Finally the third section of the book covers natural magic. This section focuses on magic that is not elemental in basis but uses the forces of nature to work with you to create your goals and desires. Here you will see aspects of the elements present in the spells and rituals, but the focus is not on the element but the magical practices in themselves.

The ninth chapter in this book focuses on the use of stones in magic. Stone and crystal use is very common in magical practices these days. This chapter illustrates how to work with basically any stone and not just gems and crystals that have specific associations with them.

The tenth chapter in this book focuses on tree magic. Here we learn and understand some of the magical aspects and attributes you can find with trees. Like before there are spells and rituals provided to give an idea of the types of spells one can create when they work with trees. The author also included a list of trees and their associations to maximize ones magical practices.

Chapter eleven deals with image magic. Here we learn the concepts associated with using pictures or symbols to represent people in spell work. The most common image magic is the poppet or voodoo doll, but that is not covered here. Other aspects and uses of image based magic can be found in this chapter.

Chapter twelve in this book focuses on a very old form of folk magic. Here we learn about and begin to understand the concepts of knot magic. There is a little bit of history and folklore given here but the meat of the chapter is in the spell examples that are given for knot based magic.

Chapter thirteen deals with candle magic. There are many texts out there that cover candle magic. This chapter focuses on the use of candle magic in natural magic. There are not many spells and rituals in this chapter but the information still provides a starting point.

Chapter fourteen deals with wax magic. This chapter is not about magic per say but more focused on types of divination that can be done using wax. Divination and magic have historically gone hand in hand which is why this chapter is in the book.

Chapter fifteen is about the use of mirror and magic. Like candle magic and image magic there is a lot of folk lore regarding magic mirrors and how they can be used in spells and rituals. There are several different spells and rituals using mirrors in this chapter including directions on how to make your own magic mirror.

Chapter sixteen deals with magic using storms. Here the author explains the power that weather based magic can have. There are spells for different occasions and purposes but also spells on how to protect yourself from the elements of the storm as it were.

The final chapter in this book chapter seventeen deals with sea magic. This is an excellent way to end the book as we go back to the illustration of natural magic given in the first chapter. Here we learn why we can work with the tides and why some spells are best done at the seaside.

As a text book for magical use this book basically covers most aspects of magic. Through this text different types of magic are expressed and shown. Through the divisions of the book the reader can understand the concepts of magic and how to best use the natural world in spells and rituals for their individual needs. As a resource for correspondences for spell work there are better books available, but as a spell book for nature magic this is an excellent guide.

Review: A Witches World of Magick

A witches world of Magick

The book A witches World of Magick is full of magical practices and concepts from around the world. For this reason the book is aptly titled. Through out the book the reader is exposed to magical cultures from the Meso-American cultures (like the Incas and the Aztecs) to Jewish Folklore, to Hindu Vedas. This book covers global magical practices.

The author of this book did a lot of research into the different folk magic practices and traditions around the world in the creation of this book. The authors dedication to providing a diverse selection of folk magic and folk lore on each topic covered is clear by the wonderful footnotes and credits given throughout the book.

This book is not your basic how to book on witchcraft or magic. If you are looking for a how to write a spell or how magic works book than this book is not for you. This book is focused on and for those in the intermediate area of study. This book is designed to provide experienced practitioners new ways of practicing magic and looking at magical concepts from folk magic practices around the world.

A witches world of Magick is an informative guide to folk magic around the world. By the end of each chapter the reader has covered several different approaches to magical techniques in folk magic traditions that they may have never heard of or explored otherwise. Each chapter while they cover specific magical concepts and techniques covers the magical concepts and techniques from different perspectives in different cultures. In doing this the author provides many different views of magic and different ways to look at magic.

There are ten chapters in this book. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of magical concept or practice. With the common thread or practice for the chapter defined, the author in each chapter provides the reader with a ton of different sets of folklore and folk magic.

The book opens by mentioning how universal the concept of magic is and how wide the varieties of magical practices there are. With in the first chapter it is clear that the book does take a global approach to the practices and magical workings. While the title of the book is “A witches world of magic” not all of the traditions and practices that are discussed are considered witchcraft. The book really only touches on witchcraft at the end of each chapter, providing witches with questions to think about for their magical practices as well as concepts for how the folk magic discussions can be applied into an individuals witchcraft today.

To further illustrate that the book is not a book for beginners the first chapter in the book covers working magic with out the use of tools. The chapter is titled No-Tools Body magic. Its clear right away that the author is showing advanced magical techniques covering the practices of the evil eye, through speech and voice alone, to gestures and movement of the body to make magic effective.

The second chapter covers potion or mixing magic. Once again the author provides a few unusual ways of thinking about potion making and mixing ingredients to make a spell work. From gypsy love potions to a tale about two Polynesian wizards the author covers both conventional and unconventional forms of mixing magic and potions. Again the author ends the chapter with concepts for the practicing witch to ask themselves to further their new magical practices and concepts.

The third chapter discusses container magic. The chapter does not mention Jar spells as found in Hoodoo and other forms of magic but rather other types of containment spells. The concept of talismans and amulets as a container for magical energy is addressed her, but is addressed in a manner related to folk magic concepts. Once again various cultures from Egypt to Nigeria and even the PowWow tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch magical practices related to containing forces and power are discussed in that chapter.

The fourth chapter is all about knot magic and binding magic. The spells covered here include a well known folk charm by sailors to create wind while at seas. Other knot magic and binding spells cover love and protection. From Gypsy magic to the sacred knots of the girdle worn by Zoroastrrians binding and knot based folk magic can be found in that chapter.

The fifth chapter is all about puncture magic. Yes the concept of voodoo dolls or dolls punctured to create a magical effect is covered here. However the dolls are only one of many different magical practices discussed here in this chapter. Not all piercing magic is baneful or curse like. The chapter covers a few examples of healing magic through punctures.

The sixth chapter is all about identification. In magic it is important to have a clear target or concept in mind when working a spell. If you are doing a distance healing for someone its important to know their name or have some way to connect the energetic forces to them. This chapter covers many different ways that a person can identify the target of their spell. From actual names to using body parts the folk magic in this chapter shows how identification of the target is essential.

The seventh chapter is actually related to the previous chapter. This chapter covers decoy magic. Here the magical practices include the well known witches jar, as well as using rocks or stones to distract a spirit. From using masks and loud noises to making an actual representation of the original target as a decoy, decoy and distraction magic is covered here.

The eighth chapter is about curse breaking. The author is clear in the beginning of the chapter that the two most common forms of magic practiced are those of healing magic and those of protection and curse breaking. The various mentioned include using parts of the body (hair, spit, etc) of the curser to remove the curse, destroying the artifacts, and sending back curses. From a modern American curse (the curse of the Bambino) to the Evil eye methods of curse breaking come in as many different forms as there are cultures in the world.

The ninth chapter is about masks and mimic magic. In shamanic cultures shape shifting is often involved in getting to know an animal spirit and to work with the animal spirit. This is just one form of mimic and mask magic involved. Other techniques include jumping high in the fields to show how the crops should grow. The idea is that by showing the fields how to grow they will and that by becoming the animal or spirit, that animal or spirit will manifest there and lend its power to the working at hand.

The final chapter discusses and mentions group magic and ritual. Group magic and ritual was common once but not so any more. From the ancient rituals of those who follow Dionysus to mentions of our modern day Pagan Pride day celebrations, the author covers why group magic is essential and why it should be considered a practice.

By the end of the book the author has given multiple cultural practices that a witch can integrate into their own practices and take inspiration from. The goal of this book is to inspire the witch to look at folklore and folk magic and find new ways of adding to their magical practices. This book is just what the intermediate witch needs to take their magic to the next level using only folklore and traditional practices.

I: Incenses -Why they are used, how to use them and choosing the right type

Incenses:

Today we are going to talk about the origins of a product line we have as well as why people use and work with magical incenses to begin with. Incenses are a large part of many forms of witchcraft, magic, and spirituality. Some people also just like to burn incense because they like the smell and the atmosphere that certain incenses can bring to a room. I know that for myself there was a simple pleasure in lighting an incense and simply enjoying the scent as it filled the room.

Why people work with incenses

So now why do people work with incenses? There are many different reasons that a person will work with incense. From simply enjoying the scent to working intense rituals incenses have many different properties that people enjoy and work with. Incenses are probably one of the most common ways that magic can be practiced. Its also one of the simplest acts of spiritual devotion that a person can engage in.

How people work with and use incenses

So what are some of these ways? It really depends on a persons spiritual path and the life an individual leads. Not everyone who burns incenses works with a spiritual or magical view. Not all paths work with incenses and sacred scents the same way. Some paths use blended incenses for rituals and magical purposes, while other traditions and practices will work with a single specific herb for its properties. Like any form of magical and spiritual work incense work comes in many different forms.

One way that most people enjoy incenses is simply to burn them for the various different scents that are out there. Many people have their favorite scents that they like to burn. For many the enjoyment of the scent is a way to relax and unwind. Other people just like to use different scents to lighten up their homes. Scents are very powerful ways that we can change our moods. This is a way that many non magical and spiritually minded people work with incense. Before I started to really study and explore magic myself, that was the main reason I worked with and enjoyed incenses.

There are some traditions that believe that when you light an incense and say a prayer over the incense that the smoke of the incense carries the prayer to heaven, the Gods, the ancestors, and the spirits that a person works with. For those who believe in this aspect of air magic and incense work by praying for their desire over the incense they believe that the energy is being scent to the Gods via the smoke of the incense. This is a very simple and easy form of magic that many people engage in.

Another belief and practice for using incense is to simply give an offering to spirits and Gods. There are different herbs and scents that are sacred and special to specific Gods and Spirits. Dragons blood resin when burned as an offering makes a wonderful offering to Dragon spirits. They love the scent and are happy when its offered to them. The God of Christianity has an incense of either Frankincense or Myrrh that is sacred to him. By offering different Gods and spirits incenses that are sacred and special to them a person can strengthen their bond with the deity or spirit.

Some people burn incenses as a part of meditation and trance work. The scents that they work with during this spiritual work often depends on exactly the nature of the work. Some people may have a blended incense that they use for generic meditation work. Other people will have different scents for different types of spirit work. They may have an incense for astral travel and out of body work and another for dream work, while having a basic scent for general meditative work. The idea here is the scent being burned in some fashion works as a mental and psychological trigger to get into that state of mind where one can engage in spiritual and magical work.

In religious ritual depending on the tradition the incenses burned have different roles. In most witchcraft circles the burning of an incense represents the element of air specifically. This allows the element of air to be present in rituals and to have the ritual and spirit work manifest through the element of air. In other rituals the scent can be used to help purify and protect a sacred space, or just to create a mood through the different scents that can be burned.

Finally a person can burn incense for the magical and spiritual properties of the herbs. By burning the incenses over charcoal, in a cone shape, or in stick form the energy and spiritual properties of the herbs are released into the world. When a person engages in the use of incenses for magical purposes by saying a charm over the incense as it burns their desires and intents are given a form to manifest in. The incense as it burns releases that energy into the universe. The person who casts the spell through the incense burning directs that energy through their intent and their words allowing the universe to manifest their desires.

Choosing the Type of Incense

Now there are different types of incenses that can be worked with. There are some benefits and there are some issues with all forms of incense work. This is why when people work with incenses they often have to make difficult decisions. There are many different factors involved with choosing the right sort of incense to work with. Depending on where you live and what sort of environment you are in some options might not be advisable for you.

There are some people who can’t handle incense smoke, so they need a different alternative. Those people often use essential oils and other scented liquids for their incense work. The scent is either diffused through evaporation means or through a small candle under a diffuser meant to heat off the scent. If you live in a place where you can’t burn incense for what ever reason essential oils through sprays and evaporation diffusers may be an option for you. The most common form of incense is that of the joss or stick incense. These are the types of incenses you see in many different types of stores. The availability of the burners and types of scents in the stick style of incense is what makes them the most popular form of incense.  To use you simply place the incense in a holder and light.

The limit to this is that you have to be specific in your needs with the scent.  Unless you know how to craft and make stick incense yourself, you are limited to the choices available to you and there is a chance that the incenses will not be made will all natural only herbal ingredients.  This incense would not be used in placed where you can not burn things.  The benefit is that there are many different scents and varities out there so you can likely find something that will suit your need.

You also have cone or shaped incenses.  These are a little less popular than the stick incense.  Here the incense is placed in a fire safe container and lit.  The incense burns down into an ash form based on the shape.  The charcoal, oils, and herbs are pressed together to make this form.  So in order for this to burn you simply light the incense cone and place it in the burner.

Like the stick incense, cone incense are limited to the scents and styles sold by suppliers and may have synthetic scents to them rather than all natural pure herbal ingredients.  The other issue is that it can not be used in a place where burning incense is forbidden. The benefit is that there are many different scents and varieties out there so you can likely find something that will suit your need.

The last form of incense is the one that is commonly used in ritual work.  This is a loose based powdered incense.  Here the incense is completely based all natural.  It is just the herbs blended and ground together for a specific purpose.  The herbs are carefully chosen for their properties and only occasionally their scent.  These incense blends are mixed in a mortar and pestle most often and burned on a charcoal disk in a censor on the altar.    This is the form of incense that Mystic Echoes crafts and sells.

The issues here are that you are limited to charcoal and censors for working with this incense.  The other issue is that the charcoal may not stay lit the entire ritual.  The largest benefit is that because these are made by hand you can ensure that only natural and herbal ingredients are included.  You have full control over the content of the incense.
